What are Dental Crowns?

There are a lot of procedures that our cosmetic dentist can use to not only repair the appearance of your teeth, but also to make your teeth function better. One of the tools that our dentist has at his disposal is dental crowns. He may recommend a crown for one of several reasons. Likely, he’ll recommend a crown because your tooth is weak and needs help or additional support. Or your teeth may need a bridge and the crown will serve as the support for that bridge. There are some cosmetic reasons for you to get a crown. For example, you might have a tooth that is discolored. In this instance, our dentist may recommend a crown that has a brighter, more natural color.

There are many different types of dental crowns that can be used. They range from ceramic to porcelain and include stainless steel. It is important to note that the type of crown you use is going to vary depending on the work that you’re trying to have done. For example, if you want a crown for purely cosmetic reasons, our dentist is going to recommend a porcelain or ceramic crown.

The American Dental Association provides guidelines that determine which dental crowns should be used in which circumstance. Each type of crown has its pros and cons. So, you need to work with our experienced dentist and identify exactly why you need a crown, and then you want to listen to his recommendation when it comes to determining what crown you should use for what tooth.

When it comes time for you to have the crown installed, you should be mentally prepared to make multiple visits to our office. During the first visit, your tooth is going to be examined to make sure that it is strong enough to support the crown and the pressure that the crown will put on your tooth when you bite down. After that initial evaluation, our dentist may need to make subtle changes to your teeth so that the crown can fit properly.

Next, an impression of your tooth is going to be made. This impression will include the impression of the teeth on either side of where the crown will be, as well as the teeth above where the crown will be. All of this is going to be used to make the customized crown. Before you leave, our dentist is going to give you a temporary crown. When the permanent crown is ready, the temporary crown is going to be removed and the new crown will be positioned with a special adhesive that will make it almost impossible to remove.
